Cornell Dubilier Electronics, Inc. (CDE) introduces the world’s only hermetic aluminum electrolytic capacitor with a glass-to-metal seal. With no dry-out mechanism and high capacitance retention at low temperatures, this technology is poised to replace banks of costly wet tantalum capacitors.

Liberty, SC – June 20, 2016 – Cornell Dubilier Electronics, Inc. (CDE) introduces its Slimpack, type MLSH, the first in a series of hermetically sealed aluminum electrolytic capacitors that the company plans to introduce over the next several months. With its glass-to-metal seal that prevents dry-out, this capacitor technology has extraordinarily long life to meet the most demanding applications for military and aerospace.

The hermetic Slimpack is a spin-off of the non-hermetic Flatpack series that the company has been supplying to military and aerospace customers for more than 20 years. The company expects this technology to replace parallel and series banks of wet tantalum capacitors for new and existing designs, especially where bulk storage is paramount. According to the company, the MLSH Slimpack measuring 1.0” x 1.5” x 0.5” will weigh less and will have more capacitance than a parallel bank of 3 or more wet tantalum capacitors as at -55 °C. High capacitance at low temperature is a key requirement for power supplies used in military and aerospace applications.

In addition to its performance advantages at low temperature, the technology is expected to have a significantly lower cost than a comparable bank of wet tantalum capacitors.

Since its founding in 1909, CDE has been dedicated to advancing capacitor technology for new applications. The company combines innovative products with engineering expertise to provide reliable component solutions for inverters, wind and solar power, electric vehicles, power supplies, motor drives, HVAC, motors, welding, aerospace, telecom, medical equipment and UPS systems.

A global company, Cornell Dubilier has ISO-9001 certified manufacturing and distribution facilities in Liberty, SC; New Bedford, MA; Mexicali, Mexico; and Hong Kong.

CDE’s hermetic MLSH Slimpack aluminum electrolytic capacitors are available from Digi-key, Mouser and TTI. For inquiries, contact: Mario DiPietro, Product Marketing Manager mdipietro@cde.com,

TDK Corporation introduces the TDK-Lambda PFE1000FA series of AC-DC power modules, a

significant upgrade to the popular PFE1000F series launched eight years ago. The new series

achieves up to a 4% efficiency improvement (up to 90%). Like the existing models, the

innovative PFE series enables designers to utilize a single device containing power factor

correction, regulation and input-output isolation. These modules have been widely used in

outdoor and liquid cooled power systems, addressing the need for fan-less applications in the

industrial, COTS, signage and communications markets.

Operating from a universal input of 85-265Vac, the PFE1000FA models are available with

nominal outputs of 12, 28 and 48Vdc and can be adjusted +/-20% via a trim-pin. All the power

modules can deliver full power with an operating baseplate temperature range of -40 to +100oC

(+85oC for the 28V and 48V models below 170Vac). An isolated module good signal, remote

on/off, 12V standby output, over voltage, over current and over temperature protection is

included on all models.

The package size and pin-out is in the same 100 x 13.4 x 160mm format as the original series,

allowing an easy upgrade of existing designs for up to 30% lower power losses and reduced

temperatures. An enhancement to the PFC circuit gives a more sinusoidal input current wave

form, providing lower harmonic currents as defined by the IEC 61000-3-2 standard. The

warranty has been extended to 5 years.

The TDK-Lambda PFE1000FA series is certified to the safety standards of UL/CSA/EN 60950-1

and is CE marked according to the Low Voltage and RoHS2 Directives.

More information can be obtained at the following TDK-Lambda Americas website,

Product availability for the PFE1000FA series can be found via the link to TDK-Lambda’s

distributor network (see “Check Distributor Stock to Buy”) at http://www.us.tdk-lambda.com/lp/.

ZF Electronic Systems (formerly known as CHERRY) is introducing a new line of switches that don’t need wired connections and do work wirelessly without batteries. Their power source is ultimately the physical actuation of the switch; in a very nice implementation of energy harvesting, that pit of motion translates into power through an innovative penny-size micro-dynamo within the body of the switch.

One benefit to designers is a much simplified ability to implement remote switches without the need to run connecting wires, which can simplify both product design and certifications. Compared to other wireless solutions, the ZF Electronic Systems energy-harvesting switches do not require periodic battery changes or even more frequent battery status checking, and there are none of the usual battery-related switch failure mode.

Inside the familiarly sized switch housing the micro-dynamo magneto-electric generator is joined by a controller, a digital modulator and a radio; the radio can be configured for many frequencies, including those common to home, office and plant automation systems.

The first of these switches are available in snap-action or rocker configurations and others can be produced to meet customer requirements. ZF Electronic Systems is also making its tiny generator available separately from these switched. They rate its mechanical life at 1,000,000 actuations and the energy it generates at a measured 0.33 mw (actuating and releasing). The RF transmission distance is rated up to 300 meters in open space, and up to 30 meters indoors with any type of obstruction.
